Sending an Avatar to Do a Human's Job: Compliance with Authority Persists Despite the Uncanny Valley

چکیده
Just as physical appearance affects social influence in human communication, it may also affect the processing of advice conveyed through avatars, computer-animated characters, and other human-like interfaces. Although the most persuasive computer interfaces are often the most human-like, they have been predicted to incur the greatest risk of falling into the uncanny valley, the loss of empathy attributed to characters that appear eerily human. Previous studies compared interfaces on the left side of the uncanny valley, namely, those with low human likeness. To examine interfaces with higher human realism, a between-groups factorial experiment was conducted through the internet with 426 midwestern U.S. undergraduates. This experiment presented a hypothetical ethical dilemma followed by the advice of an authority figure. The authority was manipulated in three ways: depiction (digitally recorded or computer animated), motion quality (smooth or jerky), and advice (disclose or refrain from disclosing sensitive information). Of these, only the advice changed opinion about the ethical dilemma, even though the animated depiction was significantly eerier than the human depiction. These results indicate that compliance with an authority persists even when using an uncannily realistic computer-

Interactive Realistic Digital Avatars - Revisiting the Uncanny Valley
The 40-year-old Uncanny Valley theory is influential in the discussion surrounding acceptance of realistic graphical agents. This theory was formulated by observing robots. While it has been shown to be valid when observing digital characters, little has been studied about acceptance when people interact with avatars, rather than simply observe a recording. The emerging technology that will soo...
متن کاملThe development of the uncanny valley in infants.
When adults view very realistic humanoid robots or computer avatars they often exhibit an aversion to them. This phenomenon, known as the "uncanny valley," is assumed to be evolutionary in origin, perhaps tapping into modules for disgust or attractiveness that detect violations of our normal expectations regarding social signals. Here, we test an alternative hypothesis that the uncanny valley i...
متن کاملThe Human Likeness Dimension of the “Uncanny Valley Hypothesis”: Behavioral and Functional MRI Findings
The uncanny valley hypothesis (Mori, 1970) predicts differential experience of negative and positive affect as a function of human likeness. Affective experience of humanlike robots and computer-generated characters (avatars) dominates "uncanny" research, but findings are inconsistent. Importantly, it is unknown how objects are actually perceived along the hypothesis' dimension of human likenes...
متن کاملA Low-Cost Head and Eye Tracking System for Realistic Eye Movements in Virtual Avatars
A virtual avatar or autonomous agent is a digital representation of a human being that can be controlled by either a human or an artificially intelligent computer system. Increasingly avatars are becoming realistic virtual human characters that exhibit human behavioral traits, body language and eye and head movements. As the interpretation of eye and head movements represents an important part ...
متن کاملThe Uncanny Valley: does it exist?
The ‘Uncanny Valley’ refers to a sense of unease and discomfort when people look at increasingly realistic virtual humans. Despite growing academic interest in the Uncanny Valley our understanding is limited and there has been little rigorous questioning to determine if the phenomenon actually exists. The Uncanny Valley questions widely held assumptions about the correlation between realism and...
